Publications page. **************************************** Waley-Cohen steals the limelight in Kempton feature Long Run's tremendously impressive victory in the re-scheduled William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on January 15 will as much be remembered for the defeat of four-times winner Kauto Star as it was for the superb performance given by the winning horse and his sporting amateur rider Sam Waley-Cohen, writes Elliot Slater. Although most impartial racegoers at the Sunbury track would have been willing Paul Nicholls' grand campaigner to make history by winning the race for a record fifth time, it surely won't have been lost on them all that the winner put up a near perfect display. Always in the ideal position (chasing front running Nacarat), jumping accurately and with tremendous enthusiasm, he was sent about his business on the home turn and soon settled the issue before bounding clear to win by an easy 10 lengths, with 28-year-old London stockbroker Waley-Cohen punching the air in delight. In a sporting world increasingly dominated by big money and hardened professionals, the Waley-Cohen family seem somewhat twee, but they embody the original sporting spirit that has made National Hunt racing the fantastic sport it is, and they are to be applauded for maintaining their standards with a small, but select group of horses, and in doing it for the sheer thrill. That's why amateur rider Sam was on board Long Run, and not someone like Tony McCoy. For the Waley-Cohen's it's about family, teamwork and literally 'the thrill of the chase - the steeplechase'. Much criticism had come Sam's way since Long Run's defeat at Cheltenham last year, but he gets on well with the horse and I defy you to tell me that any professional would have given the winner a significantly better ride than was the case in the 'King George'. Could it be possible that an amateur rider might now win the Cheltenham 2011 Gold Cup in two months time - the ultimate prize going the way of a 'part-timer'? As short as 9/2 second favourite in the Cheltenham Gold Cup odds, the Nicky Henderson-trained Long Run can still be backed at 7/1 with William Hill. Jim Wilson was the last amateur rider to win chasing's ultimate prize (in 1981). It could be time for another 'amateur' to steal the glory once again.
The fact is, this is the year you really should make Cheltenham betting one of your piorities, whether you are into horse racing or not; the opportunities are excellent. **************************************** True story Every tipping service I tried lost me money. The strike rate is lower, with longer losing runs, but this is more than offset by the better returns. A lot of time and effort has gone into developing this system. It depends on a combination of computer data analysis and knowledge of trainer quirks. It is proving remakably effective. Check the summarised results table above, where we assume that all bets are struck at starting prices to level stakes. E.g. 26 means that £260 profit has been made by betting £10 every time. This one went for the highest strike rate with horses. The basic idea was that, if you never have a loser, short odds are acceptable. It did not work out that way! We assume that all bets are struck at starting prices to level stakes. Greyhound GOLD service. Currently suspended! This service covers the evening meetings only. The tips are specially selected for use in conjunction with a staking plan. Recently revised with the aid of computer analysis for a higher strike rate at higher prices. We now have a 25% strike rate at average SP odds 5/2. Perfect for the staking plan; beat it if you can! This has turned a difficult betting scenario into almost mechanical profit.
